You Aren’t Broken. You’re Stuck: How Trauma Takes Over Your Nervous System (And How EMDR Unstucks It)
If you’ve been in traditional talk therapy for years, you already know your story. You know why you feel anxious. You know where your triggers came from. You can talk about your past until you’re blue in the face.
Yet, your chest still tightens when an email pops up. Your heart still races out of nowhere. You still freeze when someone raises their voice.
That isn't a failure of willpower. It isn't because you aren't "trying hard enough" in therapy. It happens because trauma doesn't just live in your conscious thoughts, it gets encoded directly into your body.
To understand why this happens (and how we actually fix it), we have to talk about your autonomic nervous system.
What Your Autonomic Nervous System Actually Does
Your autonomic nervous system (ANS) is the automatic control system running behind the scenes 24/7. Think of it as the wiring that keeps the lights on in your house without you ever having to hit a switch. You don't consciously tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, or your stomach to digest; the ANS handles hundreds of physical processes automatically.
Because the ANS is non-cognitive and non-verbal, it doesn't speak in words or logic. It operates entirely through raw physical sensations, impulses, and bodily states. In fact, humans share this exact same basic autonomic nervous system with all other mammals. When a dog startles at thunder or a deer freezes in headlights, that’s their ANS taking over, just like yours does when you're under stress.
Think of your ANS as a highly sensitive alarm system with two main settings:
The Gas Pedal (Sympathetic Nervous System): This mobilizes you for action. When your brain senses a threat, the gas pedal kicks in. Your heart rate skyrockets, your breathing gets shallow, and blood pumps to your muscles so you can fight or run away.
The Brakes (Parasympathetic Nervous System): This slows you down. When the threat passes, the brakes bring you back to safety so your body can rest, digest food, sleep, and connect with other human beings.
In a healthy system, you hit the gas when you need to handle a stressor, and you hit the brakes when the stressor goes away. Your body naturally moves back and forth between these states.
How the ANS Silently Controls Your Entire Reality
Because your ANS sits at the controls of your physiological survival, it acts like a filter placed over your entire life. It doesn't just manage your pulse or your digestion; it dictates how you interpret every single moment of your day.
Depending on whether your ANS feels safe or threatened, here is how it actively reshapes your experience:
Your Mind
When your ANS senses danger, it doesn't give you space for creative, flexible thinking. It floods your brain with rapid-fire, worst-case scenarios or it causes complete brain fog so you can't focus or make decisions. You aren't "a naturally negative person"; your nervous system is just scanning for landmines.
Your Body
It translates emotional stress into immediate physical reality. That unexplained knot in your stomach before a standard meeting, the tight shoulders you can't seem to un-clench, or the bone-deep exhaustion after a basic conversation—that’s your ANS firing off physical impulses to prepare you to fight, run, or shut down.
Your Emotions
Your nervous system dictates your emotional baseline. When your ANS is dysregulated, you don't just feel bad; your mood shifts rapidly without your permission. You might feel a sudden spike of anger over a minor inconvenience, or find yourself sliding into a sudden, heavy sense of dread that seems to come out of nowhere.
Your Relationship with Yourself
When your body is constantly reacting to old danger, it’s easy to blame yourself. You might feel deeply frustrated with your inability to "just relax," feel ashamed of your anxiety, or view yourself as broken. In reality, your self-talk often reflects the state of your nervous system. A stuck ANS makes you feel flawed, when you are actually just overwhelmed.
Your Relationship with Others
Your ANS decides who feels safe and who feels like a threat before your conscious brain even gets a vote. If your system is stuck in trauma, a partner's quiet mood doesn't just feel like "they're tired"; it feels like an impending crisis, driving you to either snap defensively or pull away completely to protect yourself.
Your View of the World
Whether you experience the world as a place of opportunity or a minefield isn't a conscious choice you make each morning. It’s a physical verdict delivered by your nervous system. If your ANS is stuck in threat mode, even neutral environments feel unsafe, predictable routines feel precarious, and everyday life feels like an uphill battle.
How Trauma Breaks the Thermostat
When you experience a traumatic event (or a series of ongoing stressful experiences) your nervous system gets overwhelmed. The alarm system malfunctions. Instead of returning to a calm state after the danger passes, your nervous system encodes the trauma.
It gets stuck in one of two places:
Stuck on "High" (Hyperarousal): Your gas pedal is glued to the floor. You live in a constant state of fight-or-flight. You feel irritable, hyper-vigilant, anxious, or perpetually on edge. Small stressors feel like life-or-death emergencies.
Stuck on "Low" (Hypoarousal): Your system slams on the emergency brake to protect you from total overwhelm. You feel numb, disconnected, exhausted, or completely shut down. You might feel like you're moving through life underwater.
Trauma turns a temporary survival response into a permanent lifestyle. You aren't choosing to overreact or shut down; your physical nervous system is reading the present moment through the lens of past danger.
Why Talk Therapy Isn't Always Enough
Talk therapy relies on the prefrontal cortex: the logical, thinking part of your brain. But as we established, the ANS is non-verbal and non-cognitive. When your ANS detects a threat, it bypasses logic completely. You cannot reason your way out of a physiological fight-or-flight response any more than you can talk your way out of a sunburn.
Understanding why you are triggered doesn't stop your heart from pounding. To change the body's reaction, we have to target where the memory is stored physically.
That's where EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) comes in.
How EMDR Heals the Nervous System
EMDR doesn't require you to sit on a couch and talk through every agonizing detail of your trauma for months on end. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation, typically side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, to help your brain reprocess stuck memories.
Here is what happens in your nervous system during EMDR:
We keep one foot in the present. While you briefly bring up a traumatic memory, the bilateral stimulation keeps your brain grounded in the safety of the current room.
We signal safety to the ANS. The rhythmic side-to-side movement tells your nervous system, "We are looking at this past event right now, but we are safe right here."
The brain finishes processing. EMDR unlocks the stuck physical memory and allows your brain to re-store it correctly.
The memory doesn't disappear, you still remember what happened. But the physiological charge disappears. The next time something reminds you of the event, your gas pedal doesn't slam to the floor. Your body finally understands that the event is over.
